UnitedHealthcare Settles $80,000 with HHS to Resolve HIPAA Concerns Regarding Patient Medical Records Request

UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (UHIC) has reached a settlement with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) over a potential violation of the HIPAA Privacy Rule’s right of access provision. UHIC agreed to pay $80,000 and implement a corrective action plan. This is the 45th Right of Access case to be resolved through voluntary settlement. The complaint was filed in March 2021, alleging that UHIC did not respond to an individual’s request for their medical records. UHIC’s failure to provide timely access to the records was determined to be a potential violation. In addition to the settlement, UHIC will be monitored by OCR for one year.
